19th September 2018 Around Town Stavanger, Norway

Hi Dear Folk,

After our early morning walk over to the Lake, then up to the old town, we walked back into town and up another hill to the Valberg Tower which was built as a fire watch tower 1850-1853.   Unfortunately it was closed, so as we were walking back down to the main street.  Jean noticed a yarn shop that she knew I would like.  I bought one skein of yarn that I have crocheted into a scarf.

From here we walked up to the King's Summer Palace and then back down passing what we realized was the local town municipal building, like the council offices for Stavanger.  Where we were able to use the WC and got a very nice booklet about the history and town of Stavanger, and it was free.

Back into the old town area to visit the Sardine Cannery Museum.

These breads look good.

As we were walking through this cobbled stoned area of town a seagull swooped down out of nowhere and took a young women's entire burger sandwich, she was stunned, it happened so quickly.

In the photo above, the area just beneath this plaza is used as a market square, not many stalls, too late in the season.  But we did find one, whose home was up north.  I bought a lovely pair of Norwegian mitts and a fur headband.  We thought they were expensive, as we hadn't really compared any other shops at this time.  It was only later we realized his prices were very good in comparison.

One thing he had on his stall were these birch bark boxes, with lovely detail.  Now what is interesting about this is that in Alaska I found the very same boxes.  I think this is an artisan craft of the northern arctic people.

There seemed to be a lot of primary school children out on trips.

Varberg Tower in the distance.  You can also see the Stavanger City Bridge it has one tower and was opened in 1978.
