Bread from the Bank

Once a month we go to a food bank and pick up one bag of groceries.  Sometimes they also have bread and sometimes not.  This month was particularly good, look at all the lovely breads hubby came home with, plus there was a Tuscan loaf and a bag of bagels. Even when he was working I would never have spent this much money on a loaf of bread.  So we've rather been enjoying them.  A couple I froze the others we kept to eat now.

Back Door Wood Holder

Well here we are into Fall at they say in North America.  I was discussing this use of the word Fall for Autumn with older friends from South Africa.  Who when they first left S. Africa, settled in BC, Canada and then relocated to PA.  In British Columbia and Pennsylvania there are a lot of trees and it is a falling of the leaves.

This morning is wet and it has been quite a bit after a drought of a summer.  Well I wanted to show you my new wood holder; which sits by the back door.  Just the trick to keep the wood off the ground and covered, although it seems we may have to put wood on top of the cover to hold it down on windy days.  Not too expensive either in Big Lots.  We have already had several fires.

Moss in the Morning

The front of our house faces N.N.W., so doesn't get too much sun, therefore lots of lichen and moss grow on the trees and around the bricks and shrubbery.

This is a patch of moss growing under the rhododendron bush.

I love moss so velvety, with depth to it and gossamer dreams.

Book Pile and Blogger Pics

My Pile of books from the library.  I had to spend a whole day at home before a procedure in the hospital last week, so stocked up on some lovely viewing books.  Isn't this a lovely garden book?

Have you had problems uploading your pics?  I've quite given up arranging them in the order I want them it's impossible and takes too long.  So if these don't look in the correct order blame blogger.

CertainTeed Window and the Weekend

Oops!  Need to do a little cleaning.

When we bought our house seven years ago it had all new windows, except two.  All CertainTeed windows.  Several years ago I noticed that something was wrong with the bottom half of this window, obviously mold.  But I never did anything about it, just busy life, etc.  As hubby's home and being frugal it came to me that probably CertainTeed has a guarantee with their windows.  So hubby got on the job and sure enough they will give you a new glass.  Now it's a matter of finding out how much it will cost to install it, they don't cover that.

The window was always quite blocked by our rhododendron, but we cut it back to let in more light, and I think the mold is getting worse and worse as time goes on.

Well what a fun note to enter the weekend on.  It looks like we are to have an Indian Summer, we almost always do, so that will be a respite from the rain.  A week ago last Thursday it rained ten inches in one day.  The whole summer has been terribly dry; which has been reflected in our water bill.  We did call the water company to give us a break on it and pretty much they said no.  then a very nice lady called back and said were we satisfied with how our problem was handled, and Bo just explained nicely, that the water company couldn't help us, as we'd used it so must pay.  She said I can help you, and should be giving us some kind of credit.  Hubby didn't like to ask how much.  And I'd just paid the entire bill.  Hopefully the credit will go towards the next bill.

You take all the little bits of help you can get where ever it comes from.  One is thankful.  As it's always been said 'you look after the pennies, the pounds look after themselves.'  And the less I spend the less I have to work.  I feel as I get older my time is more precious to me.

How to have a frugal day out.  Pack your own picnic and just do one wine tasting.  You could buy a passport for all seven wineries; which was $30.00 but I just did the one $7.00, quite enough with ten wines to try.

After having our wine, cheese and crackers, we followed this up with coffee, shortbread and chocolate in the vineyards.

Didn't buy any wine, I feel bad about that, but needs must.  Just shows how non-employment ripples down, because I would have bought one bottle of wine, when hubby was employed.
